This paper contains the following result: For all \(x,y\in {\mathbb R}^8\) there is a finite set \(S_{xy}\subset{\mathbb Q}^8\) such that \(x,y\in S_{xy}\) and each unit distance preserving map \(S_{xy}\to{\mathbb R}^8\) preserves also the distance between \(x\) and \(y\). In particular this implies (by letting \(x,y\) run through \({\mathbb Q}^8\)) that any map of \({\mathbb Q}^8\) into itself which preserves unit distances, does preserve distances. The proof is mainly based on the proof of another theorem by the same author [Aequationes Math. 59, 124-133 (2000; Zbl 0948.51014)].
