Jensen's functional equation on groups. III (Q5945053)

[For parts I and II see ibid. 39, No. 1, 85-99 (1990; Zbl 0688.39007) and 58, No. 3, 311-320 (1999; Zbl 0938.39024).] Let \((G,.)\) be a group, \((H,.)\) an abelian group, and \(f\) be a mapping of \(G\) into the abelian group \(H\) satisfying the functional equation \[ f(xy)+ f(y^{-1}x)= 2f(x),\quad \text{for all }x,y\in G \tag{1} \] and the normalisation condition \[ f(e)=0.\tag{2} \] The author solves the functional equation (1) with the normalisation condition (2) on free groups and illustrates how his results lead to solutions on more specific groups such as \(GL_n(Z)\), \(SL_2(Z)\), symmetric group \(S_n\), alternating group \(A_n\), dihedral groups and finite abelian groups.
