The direct sum of the Grothendieck rings of symmetric groups \(S_n\) and also of wreath products \(\Gamma\sim S_n\) associated to a finite group \(\Gamma\) have been found to have close connection with vertex operators in work of \textit{W. Wang} [Duke Math. J. 103, 1-23 (2000; Zbl 0947.19004)] and \textit{I. B. Frenkel, N. H. Jing} and \textit{W. Wang} [Int. Math. Res. Not. 4, 195-222 (2000; Zbl 1011.17020)]. The authors are motivated by striking a parallel between this theory and the theory of Hilbert schemes of points on a surface as pointed out in \textit{H. Nakajima} [Univ. Lect. Ser. Vol. 18, A. M. S., Providence (1999; Zbl 0949.14001)]. So they aim to realize the Virasoro algebra in the framework of wreath products, which they do in the paper under review. They also remark that a convolution operator here devised had already been considered by \textit{I. P. Goulden} [Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 344, 421-440 (1994; Zbl 0805.05086)]. They hope that their point of view will offer new insights into previously unrelated fields of mathematics.
