The isometry groups \(V\) of periodic ornaments appearing on the visible surfaces of a beam in a wooden-beam ceiling are defined in terms of layer groups (three). The specific situation is taken as an illustration for the derivation and the classification of crystallographic groups in a cohomology approach based on the first cohomology group \(H^1(H,\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z})\). In this group, \(\mathbb{Z}\) takes the one-dimensional lattice translations of the ornaments into account, \(\mathbb{Q}/\mathbb{Z}\) the possible non-primitive translations and \(H\) is the point group. The cohomology groups are computed for the point groups of the type of ornaments considered. The number of equivalence classes of these ornamental groups is indicated.
