The Prandtl-Reuss theory of plasticity is generalized to polymeric materials taking into account large elastic strains. The basic theory is developed by using a multiconfigurational approach, and the evolution equation for natural configurations is derived based on the criterion of maximum rate of dissipation. Two sets of finite deformation theories, with a neo-Hookean elastic response and a von Mises-like yield surface in different stress-like spaces, are also developed. The paper closes with a discussion on the effect of finite elastic strains on the response of material subject to a simple homogeneous deformations.
