The author investigates the effect of hygrothermal conditions on the buckling and postbuckling of shear deformable laminated cylindrical shells under combined axial compression and external pressure. The governing equations are obtained on the basis of Reddy's higher-order shear deformation shell theory with von Kármán-type kinematic nonlinearity, taking into account hygrothermal effects, the nonlinear prebuckling deformations and initial geometric imperfections. A boundary-layer theory of shell bucking and singular perturbation technique are used to determine buckling loads and postbuckling equilibrium paths. Closely related results are published in the author's article [Appl. Math. Mech., Engl. Ed. 22, No. 3, 270--281 (2001; Zbl 1008.74033)]
