Informally, an \(A_{\infty}\)-category (with extra conditions imposed) models a projective noncommutative space together with the formal moduli space of its deformations. The moduli space of such noncommutative spaces consists of many connected components. The boundary of the compactification of a component may contain cusps. A noncommutative space can degenerate into a commutative one at a cusp. The purpose of this paper is to explain, without giving details, the idea of noncommutative compactification in the example of abelian varieties. The noncommutative spaces are described by certain categories of sheaves with connections which are flat along fibers. In the case of abelian varieties, this approach leads to quantum tori as a noncommutative boundary of the moduli space. The author also discusses the relations to mirror symmetry, modular forms and deformation theory.
