A function \(f:\mathbb{R} \to\mathbb{R}\) belongs to the Zygmund space \(\Lambda (1,\mathbb{R})\) if there exists a constant \(M>0\) so that \(|f(x)|\leq M\) and \(|\Delta^2_h f(x)|\leq Mh\) for all \(x\in\mathbb{R}\) and \(h\in[0,1]\). The author characterizes the functions \(f\) of the Zygmund space \(\Lambda(1, \mathbb{R})\) by linear spline approximation. He considers the decomposition of \(f\) into the following linear combination of shifted linear splines \(\sum^\infty_{p =1} \sum^\infty_{j= -\infty} c_{p,j} (f)2^{1-p} B_1(2^{p-1}x-j)\) where \(B_1\) denotes the linear cardinal \(B\)-spline. It is proved that \(f\in \Lambda(1, \mathbb{R})\) if and only if \(\{\{c_{p,j} (f)\}^\infty_{j=-\infty}\}^\infty_{p=1} \in\ell^\infty\).
