In modular representation theory, there are several notions of a block induced from a block of a subgroup. Each of these applies only in special cases and are all the same in those cases where all apply. The authors look for new features of blocks that may be compatible with induction, and find some situations where induction is not defined in any sense. It is shown that unlike for Brauer induction, Alperin-Burry induction is not always defined from the normalizer of a chain of \(p\)-subgroups. The same example shows that admissible induction and being of multiplicity one are not transitive. Finally, the connection between defect groups is studied when the subgroup block has Abelian defect group.
