Let \(X\) be a complex manifold. A holomorphic family of rational maps \(f\) over \(X\) is a holomorphic map \(f:X\times \mathbb{P}^1\to \mathbb{P}^1\). For each parameter \(\lambda\in X\), one obtains a rational map \(f_\lambda: \mathbb{P}^1\to \mathbb{P}^1\) with Julia set \(J(f_\lambda)\). The bifurcation locus \(B(f)\) of the family \(f\) over \(X\) is the set of all \(\lambda_0\in X\) for which \(\lambda\mapsto j(f_\lambda)\) is a discontinuous function (in the Hausdorff topology) in any neighborhood of \(\lambda_0\). In this paper the author constructs a \((1,1)\)-current on the parameter space of a holomorphic family of rational maps, supported exactly on the bifurcation locus.
