Let \({\mathfrak g}\) be a quasitriangular Lie bialgebra with \(r\)-matrix \(r\) in \({\mathfrak g}\otimes{\mathfrak g}\) satisfying the classical Yang-Baxter equation. The double \(D({\mathfrak g})={\mathfrak g}\otimes{\mathfrak g}^*\) is a Lie algebra using the convolution product on \({\mathfrak g}^*\) coming from the cobracket on \({\mathfrak g}\), and coadjoint actions of \({\mathfrak g}\) and \({\mathfrak g}^*\). This paper gives an explicit description of \(D({\mathfrak g})\) and the embeddings of \({\mathfrak g}\) and \({\mathfrak g}^*\) in it in terms of \(r\) and relates this to the case when \({\mathfrak g}\) is the tangent Lie bialgebra of a Poisson-Lie group. More precisely, the subspace \({\mathfrak f}\) of \({\mathfrak g}\) spanned by the tensor components of \(r+r^{21}\) is an ideal of \({\mathfrak g}\). \(D({\mathfrak g})\) is an extension of the semidirect sum \({\mathfrak g}*{\mathfrak f}\) by an abelian Lie algebra, and the 2-cocycle \(\alpha\) defining this extension is computed. The image of \({\mathfrak g}^*\) in \(D({\mathfrak g})\) is described via an explicit 1-chain for a subalgebra \({\mathfrak b}\) of \({\mathfrak g}*{\mathfrak f}\) whose coboundary is essentially the restriction of \(\alpha\) to \({\mathfrak b}\). Now assume the base field is the real or complex numbers, and let \(g\), \(g^*\), \(D(g)\) be tangent Lie bialgebras to the finite-dimensional connected, simply connected Poisson-Lie groups \(G\), \(G^*\), \(D(G)\) respectively. Then the description just given is lifted to a construction of \(D(G)\) as an extension of \(G*F\) by \({\mathfrak f}^\perp\). A final section treats the cases of factorizable and triangular Lie bialgebras, where related results were previously known.
