The subject of this paper is an old theorem (published in 1920) of Ferenc Lukács, untimely deceased (1891-1918) capable Hungarian mathematician. This theorem states that if a periodic function is integrable in the Lebesgue sense and has a discontinuity of the first kind at a point \(x,\) then the \(m\)th partial sum of the conjugate series of its Fourier series diverges at \(x\) at the rate of \(\log m.\) The main goal of the paper under review is to generalize this result to the case of double Fourier series; in this generalization for the \((m,n)\)th rectangular partial sum the mentioned rate is \(\log m\log n.\) As a corollary, for a function of two variables of the Hardy-Krause bounded variation the conditions are given in terms of Fourier coefficients in order that the Borel measure induced by this function be nonatomic.
