The author considers canonical curves (defined over an algebraically closed field) with a given point \(P\). He defines a subset of the Weierstrass gaps at \(P\) which he calls the special gaps, and in terms of these describes the intersection divisors of \(C\) with its osculating spaces at \(P\). This information is used (with an additional hypothesis on the gap sequence) to describe a type of basis of the \(n\)-differentials on \(C\), \(n \geq 2\). These results generalize those of \textit{G. Oliveira} and \textit{K-O. Stöhr} [Geom. Dedicata 67, 45-63 (1997; Zbl 0904.14018) and 65-82 (1997; Zbl 0904.14019)]. A sequel is promised in which these bases for \(n\)-differentials are applied to the study of moduli spaces of pointed Gorenstein curves with a given gap sequence.
