    The author considers a second-order semilinear parabolic equation \({\partial u\over \partial t} - Lu + a(x) f(u) =0\) in \(\Omega\times (0,\infty)\) as well as an elliptic equation \({\partial^2 u\over \partial t^2} + Lu - a(x) f(u) =0\) in \(\Omega\times (0,\infty)\), where \(Lu = \sum_{i,j=1}^n{\partial \over \partial x_i}(a_{ij}(x) {\partial u \over\partial x_j})\). The equations are studied with a nonlinear boundary condition \({\partial u\over \partial N} + b(x) g(u) = 0\) on \(\partial \Omega\), \({\partial u\over \partial N} = \sum_{i,j=1}^n \cos(\nu,x_i) a_{ij}(x) {\partial u\over \partial x_j}\), and with an initial condition \(u(x,0)=u_0(x)\), \(x\in \Omega\). The positive solutions of both these problems are discussed, and the conditions guaranteeing that \(u(t,x)\) tends to zero as \(t\to\infty\) uniformly for \(x\in \overline{\Omega}\) are given. Also the asymptotic profile of \(u(x,t)\) is described.
