The basic character table of the unitriangular group (Q5946426)

Let \(K\) be an arbitrary field and let \(n\) be a positive integer. Let \(U_n(K)\) denote the group of all unipotent upper-triangular \(n\times n\) matrices with coefficients in \(K\) and let \(u_n(K)\) denote the Lie algebra consisting of all nilpotent upper-triangular \(n\times n\) matrices with coefficients in \(K\). The author defines and studies the basic subvarieties of \(u_n(K)\) and \(U_n(K)\). Then the author deals with the character theory of the finite unitriangular group \(U_n(q)\) defined over the finite field of \(q\) elements. He calculates the values of all the basic characters of \(U_n(q)\) and constructs the basic character table of the group. Basic characters were defined by author [in J. Algebra 175, No. 1, 287-319 (1995; Zbl 0835.20052)]. As a consequence, it is given a characterization of the basic subvarieties of \(U_n(q)\) and \(u_n(q)\) in terms of elementary characters of \(U_n(q)\). An orthogonality relation for the basic characters of \(U_n(q)\) is proved.
