The Fifth International Symposium on Orthogonal Polynomials and Special Functions and their Applications, was held in Patras, Greece, in September 1999, and was dedicated to Prof. Chihara. This paper gives a summary of his lecture (an ``informal and rather personal report on what a bit player observed happening on stage in this ongoing drama we call orthogonal polynomials'', as the author says in the abstract). The paper starts with the 1950s.
