Let \(\{e_n\}^\infty_{n=1}\) be an orthonormal basis of a separable Hilbert space \(H\), and \(P_N\) the orthogonal projection onto the \(N\)-dimensional subspace \(H_N\) spanned by \(\{e_1, e_2,\dots, e_N\}\). Let \(T\) be the tridiagonal operator defined by \(Te_n= a_n e_{n+1}+ a_{n-1} e_{n-1}+ b_ne_n\), \(Te_1= a_1e_2+ b_1e_2\), where \(\{a_n\}^\infty_{n=1}\) and \(\{b_n\}^\infty_{n=1}\) are positive and real sequences, respectively. The truncated operator \(T_N:= P_N TP_N\) has, as an operator in \(H\), a discrete spectrum with \(N\) eigenvectors in \(H_N\) and the eigenvectors \(\{e_{N+k}\}^\infty_{k=1}\) corresponding to the eigenvalue zero. Now, when one means by eigenvalues of \(T_N\) the eigenvalues of \(T_N\) corresponding to the eigenvectors in \(H_N\), let \(\Lambda(T)\) be the set of all limit points of eigenvalues \(\{\lambda_N\}\) of \(T_N\) as \(N\to\infty\). It is known that if \(T\) is selfadjoint, \(\Lambda(T)\) contains the spectrum \(\sigma(T)\) of \(T\), bu tthey do not always coincide with each other. The note under review gives sufficient conditions for \(T\) such that one has equality \(\sigma(T)= \Lambda(T)\).
