The authors consider an inverse problem for determining some geometrical quantities of a general bounded domain \(\Omega\) in \({\mathbb R}^2\), e.g. the area of \(\Omega\), the total length and the curvature of its boundary etc., from the complete knowledge of the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian. They, first, obtain the asymptotic estimates of the spectral distribution \(\hat{\mu}(t)\) as \(|t|\rightarrow 0\), where \(\hat{\mu}(t)\equiv \sum_{l=1}^{\infty} \exp(-itE_l^{1/2})\), \(i=\sqrt{-1}\), \(E_l (1\leq l<\infty)\) are the eigenvalues of the negative Laplacian \(-\Delta \equiv -\sum_{k=1}^{2} \partial ^2/\partial x_{k}^2\) with piecewise smooth Dirichlet, Neumann, or Robin boundary conditions on the piecewise smooth boundary. Thus, the above-mentioned inverse problem is solved using the asymptotic estimates of the spectral distribution.
