This paper deals with the asymptotic expansion of a counting function defined as follows. Given a closed manifold of negative curvature \(M\), an element of the first homology group of \(M\) and a positive real \(l>0\), one studies the number of simple closed geodesics in this given homology class that have length less than \(l\). Notice that this number is finite because \(M\) has negative curvature. Hence this gives an integer valued function on \(l\). The asymptotic expansion of this function was established in the case of constant curvature by \textit{R. Phillips} and \textit{P. Sarnak} in [Duke Math. J. 55, 287-297 (1987; Zbl 0642.53050)], and generalized more recently by Pollicot-Sharp and Anantharaman to the case of variable curvature. The first term of those expansions does not depend on the homology class, but the others do. In this paper, the author studies the dependency of the higher order terms on the homology class. In particular he proves some nice properties of those terms.
