Wave propagation in composite materials are of constant interest due to the appearance of dispersion and attenuation. Here the authors consider the wave propagation in a fiber-reinforced composite layer. It is assumed that the fibers are parallel and perpendicular to the direction of wave propagation. First, the authors present an overview of various methods used by solving the aforementioned problem. Then an iterative effective medium model, based on single scattering method, is proposed. To solve the single scattering problem, the authors use a two-dimensional boundary element method. Numerical result obtained by applying the proposed method are compared with known results, and a good agreement is observed. The quantities under study are phase velocity and attenuation, and the materials considered are those often encountered in applications (boron, epoxy, and so on).
