This article deals with solvability properties of the equation \(Tu= Nu\) \((u\in X)\), where \(X\) is a real Banach space, compactly embedded in a real Banach space \(Z\), \(T: X\to X^*\) a monotone hemicontinuous coercive operator and such that the relations \(x_n\to x\), \(Tx_n\to Tx\) imply \(x_n\to x\), \(N: X\to X^*\) a demicontinuous operator. The main result is an existence theorem for this equation in a nonempty closed convex set \(M\) in the case when \(T\) is monotone, \(N\) is compact, and when \(Tv= Nu\) implies \(v\in M\). As application the equation \(Ju=Nu\) with the duality operator is considered; in the corresponding results the authors assume that \(N\) satisfies some growth condition in terms of the best constant of the embedding of \(X\) into \(Z\). There are presented three examples of the applications of abstract results to boundary value problems for partial differential equations, in particular, for the equations \(-\Delta^s_p u=\lambda|u|^{p- 2}u\) and \(-\text{div}(|\nabla u|^{p- 2}\nabla u)^su= f(s,u)\).
