When the Uzawa algorithm or the Arrow-Hurwitz algorithm is applied to the Stokes problem, the Schur complement operator \(\operatorname {div} \Delta^{-1} \text{grad}\) is crucial. The role that is usually played by the Helmholtz decomposition is now taken by the Velte decomposition. In particular, the component with harmonic functions of the decomposition remains in the iteration. Discrete analoga for the finite element spaces are discussed. The constant in the inf-sup condition can often be given in terms of a geometric property called the Horgan-Payne angle. The paper concludes with numerical examples and a detailed discussion of other results in the literature.
