The authors study the existence of unbounded trajectories for a dynamical system governed by the differential equation \(\dot{x} = f(x)\) in \(\mathbb{R}^n\). The main idea is the introduction of appropriate auxiliary variables and functions allowing the original system to be passed to a new system of dimension one greater than the original, to which local methods can be applied. Some examples are given and in particular it is demonstrated how abstract results can be used to deduce the lack of global stabilizability for a nonlinear control system.
