The authors consider a cylindrical crack located in a functionally graded material (FGM) interlayer between two coaxial dissimilar homogeneous cylinders subjected to a torsional impact loading. The authors suppose that the two elastic homogeneous dissimilar cylinders are perfectly bonded through an elastic FGM layer, and the shear modulus and mass density of the FGM interlayer vary continuously between those of the two coaxial cylinders. It is also assumed that the external cylinder is infinite in radius. Although this is an idealized model for the purpose of obtaining an analytical solution, it actually has a background in engineering practice. To solve the present problem, Laplace and Fourier integral transforms are used, and a dislocation density function is introduced. The mixed boundary value problem is first reduced to a singular integral equation with Cauchy-type kernel in Laplace domain, which is solved numerically. Then a numerical Laplace inversion Miller-Guy technique is consequently used to obtain the dynamic stress intensity factor in the physical domain. The computational results are shown graphically to reveal the influences of relative magnitudes of adjoining material properties, the crack location, and the FGM interlayer thickness on the stress intensity factor.
