Let \(x\) and \(y\) denote homogeneous coordinates of points in the finite projective spaces \(\text{PG}_n(q)\) and \(\text{PG}_m(q^k)\) respectively, and write \({\mathbb F}_{q}\) for the Galois field of order \(q\). Put NEWLINE\[NEWLINEx\otimes y = {\mathbb F}_{q^k}(x_0y_0,x_0y_1,\dots,x_0y_m,x_1y_0,x_1y_1,\dots,x_ny_{m-1},x_ny_m).NEWLINE\]NEWLINE Then \(\text{PG}_n(q)\otimes \text{PG}_m(q^k)\) is the point set of the holey Segre variety \({\mathcal S}_{n,m}(q,k) \subseteq \text{PG}_{nm+n+m}(q^k)\). (The case \(k=1\) yields the ordinary Segre varieties.) If \((n,k)\neq(m,1)\), then the automorphism group of \({\mathcal S}_{n,m}(q,k)\) is isomorphic to \(\text{PGL}_{n+1}(q)\times \text{PGL}_{m+1}(q^k)\). NEWLINENEWLINENEWLINEThe authors describe some special cases in greater detail. Using Singer cycles, they show, e.g., that \({\mathcal S}_{n,1}(q,n{+}1)\) is a subgeometry \(U\cong\text{PG}_{2n+1}(q)\) embedded in the Segre variety \({\mathcal S}_{1,n}(q^{n+1},1)\). They discuss fibrations of \({\mathcal S}_{n,n}(q,n{+}1)\) into Segre varieties \({\mathcal S}_{n,n}(q,1)\) and some \(n\)-dimensional spaces, and they conclude with some remarks on the smallest holey Segre varieties \({\mathcal S}_{1,1}(q,2)\).
