The author discusses under his title heading the case for the Archimedean palimpsest of recent auction. The palimpsest dates from a time period centuries following Archimedes (who died in 212 B.C.). The long-ago manuscript provides other readings of four volumes by Archimedes and includes the original Greek version of `On floating bodies'.
