    The solvability of the boundary value problem \[ \frac 1A(Au')'+f(\cdot,u,Au')=0,\quad u>0\text{ on }\mathbb{R}^+=(0,\infty)\text{ and }\lim_{t\to 0^+}u(t)=0, \] is studied. Here, \(A\) is a positive differentiable function on \(\mathbb{R}^+\) and \(f(x,y,z)\), \((x,y,z)\in\mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}^+\times \mathbb{R}^+\), is a measurable function continuous with respect to \(y\) and \(z\). The basic hypotheses are: \(\frac 1A\) is integrable in a neighbourhood of \(O\) and \[ |f(x,y,z)|\leq y h_1(x,y,z)+zh_2(x,y,z) \qquad \text{for all }x,y,z\in\mathbb{R}^+, \] where \(h_i\), \(i=1,2\), are suitable. The authors use a fixed-point argument to prove that there is a constant \(b>0\) such that for each \(c\in(0,b]\) the problem considered has a solution \(u\in C([0,\infty))\cap C^1((0,\infty))\) satisfying \(\lim_{t\to\infty} u(t)/\rho(t)=c\) with \(\rho(t)=\int^t_0\frac{dr}{A(r)}\) for \(t\geq 0\). A similar result is obtained for the more general boundary value problem \[ \frac 1A(Au')'-qu+f(\cdot,u,Au')=0,\quad u>0\text{ on }\mathbb{R}^+\text{ and }\lim_{t\to 0}u(t)=0, \] where \(q\) is a measurable nonnegative function on \(\mathbb{R}^+\) such that \(Aq\) is locally integrable on \([0,\infty)\).
