This paper is concerned with composition factor multiplicities in Weyl modules. The Lusztig conjecture gives these numbers when the highest weight of the Weyl module in question is restricted (and the characteristic \(p\) is at least twice the Coxeter number for the semisimple algebraic group being dealt with). This is, by Steinberg's tensor product theorem, enough to determine all irreducible characters. The author of the present paper gives an algorithm for the multiplicities of an arbitrary Weyl module in terms of ``restricted'' ones. In principle this allows him to determine all such multiplicities in the cases where the Lusztig conjecture is known (e.g., for \(p\) very large or when the rank of the group is very small). He describes also how his algorithm is related to certain modules which come from the corresponding quantum group at a \(p^2\)-th root of \(1\) (as studied by \textit{Z.-Z. Lin} [J. Algebra 208, No. 1, 276-303 (1998; Zbl 0917.17004)]). Moreover, there are connections to filtrations of Weyl modules which \textit{J. E. Humphreys} [Commun. Algebra 12, 2665-2677 (1984; Zbl 0546.20036)] conjectured to exist. Finally, the author points out that his procedure works equally well for quantum groups at roots of unity in a field of prime characteristic. (Also submitted to MR).
