When \(g\) is a holomorphic function on a Stein domain in \(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\), the equation \(\partial u/\partial z_1=g\) is locally solvable for \(u\), and \textit{H.~Suzuki} [Sci. Rep. Tokyo Kyoiku Daigaku, Sect. A 11, 253-258 (1972; Zbl 0255.35005)] gave necessary and sufficient conditions for the equation to be globally solvable for every~\(g\). The author generalizes by fixing \(n\) holomorphic functions \(f_1\), \dots, \(f_n\) and finding necessary and sufficient conditions for the partial differential equation \[ \frac{\partial (f_1,\dots,f_n,u)} {\partial(z_1,\dots,z_{n+1})} =g \] to be globally solvable for every~\(g\). The paper contains two applications. \textit{O. Fujita} proved [J. Math. Kyoto Univ. 19, 231-254 (1979; Zbl 0425.32002)] that under certain natural assumptions, a list \((f_1,\dots,f_n)\) of polynomials on \(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\) can be completed to an automorphism of \(\mathbb{C}^{n+1}\) by appending a suitable polynomial \(f_{n+1}\); the author shows that under the same hypotheses one can obtain an automorphism by taking \(f_{n+1}\) to be a global (nonpolynomial) solution of \[ \frac{\partial(f_1,\dots,f_n,f_{n+1})} {\partial(z_1,\dots,z_{n+1})} = \varphi(f_1,\dots,f_n) \] for an arbitrary nonvanishing entire function \(\varphi\) on \(\mathbb{C}^n\). The second application, motivated by a local immersion theorem of \textit{Y.~Nishimura} [Publ. Res. Inst. Math. Sci. 14, 643-654 (1978; Zbl 0434.32021)] is a global immersion theorem for Stein holomorphic families of open Riemann surfaces.
