The author introduces a seminorm \(\|\|_{2,r},\;r>0\), on the space of \(C^\infty\) functions on a reductif symmetric space \(G/H\) in the following way: Let \(\sigma \) be an involution of \(G=\exp \mathfrak g\) , let \(F\) be the subgroup of the points in \(G\) which are fixed by \(\sigma \) and let \(H\) be an open subgroup of \(F\). Let \(\theta\) be a Cartan involution commuting with \(\sigma\). Denote by \(B\) the Killing form of \(\mathfrak g\). Let \(\mathfrak q\) (resp. \(\mathfrak s\)) be the eigenspace for the eigenvalue -1 of \(\sigma \) (resp. of \(\theta\)). For {\(X\in \mathfrak s\cap\mathfrak q\)}, and \(g\in K\exp(X)H\), let \(\omega (gH)=\|X\|=(-B(X,\theta X))^{1/2}.\) Then for \(f\in C^\infty(G/H)\), \(\|f\|_{2,r}^2\) is defined as \( \varlimsup_{\varepsilon \to 0} \varepsilon^r\int_{G/H}|f(x)|^2e^{\varepsilon \omega(x)} dx.\) The author shows that the \(C^\infty\) \(K\)-finite eigenfunctions of the algebra of all \(G\)-invariant differential operators on \(G/H\), for which this seminorm is finite, as well as for their derivatives from the left, are tempered. Reciprocally, an explicit expression of the semi-norm is given for the \(K\)-finite tempered eigenfunctions with a regular character \(\chi\): there exists a unique integer \(i(\chi)\), such that for \(f\in {\mathcal A}_{temp}(G/H,\chi)\) and every \(r>0\), one has that \(\|f\|_{2,r}\) is finite, if and only if \(r\geq i(\chi)\) and \(\|f\|_{2,i(\chi)}^2\) is of the form \(\sum_{Q\in {\mathcal P}^{i(\chi)}}C(Q)\sum_s \|f_{Q,s}\|_2^2.\) Applying these results to Eisenstein integrals, general Schur orthogonality relations are obtained. This work generalizes and specifies the results of \textit{H. Midorikawa} [Adv. Stud. Pure Math. 14, 257-287 (1988; Zbl 0732.22012)].
