On the first cohomology of arithmetic groups (Q5949569)

The authors study the restriction to smaller groups of cohomology classes of arithmetic groups (possibly after moving the class by a Hecke correspondence). In this way vanishing results on smaller groups imply vanishing on bigger groups. This is applied to obtain the vanishing of the first cohomology of cocompact arithmetic lattices in \(\text{SU}(n, 1)\) which arise from hermitian forms over division algebras \(D\) of degree \(p^2\) for an odd prime \(p\).
