Metric spaces in pure and applied mathematics (Q5949806)

This is a survey paper primarily discussing the mathematics of phylogenetic analysis, such as classification of animal groups, in relation to metrics on trees. \textit{J. R. Isbell}'s concept of injective hull of a metric space [Comment. Math. Helv. 39, 65-76 (1964; Zbl 0151.30205)] is discussed, tree-like dissimilarities, split-prime and split metrics, and a computer program which determines a space of split metrics, known as SplitsTree.
