Let \(G\) be a real or \(p\)-adic unipotent algebraic group and \(T\) a continuous homomorphism of \(G\). Certain probability measures \(\mu\) on \(G\) are called \(T\)-decomposable, if there exists a probability measure \(\nu\) such that \(\mu=T(\mu)*\nu\). One of the main results of the paper is that such a \(\mu\) decomposes into \(\mu=\mu_0*\nu_0\), where \(\mu_0=T(\mu_0)*\delta_x\) is called \(T\)-invariant and \(T^n(\nu_0)\to\delta_e\); \(\nu_0\) is called contractible with respect to \(T\). Under some additional condition \(\nu_0\) is also \(T\)-decomposable, however, a counterexample shows that this is not true if the additional condition is dropped. Some results are generalized to power bounded operators \(T\) on \(p\)-adic Banach spaces. As a tool for the proofs, some convergence-of-types theorems on \(p\)-adic groups and Banach spaces are also presented.
