The book is devoted to the discrete-time finite-order Volterra models as a basis for nonlinear system identification and model-based computer control. The analytical and practical advantages of the Volterra models are pointed out. Topics covered include: qualitative behaviour of the Volterra models compared and contrasted with other nonlinear model classes (Chapter 2), structural restrictions and extensions to Volterra model class (Chapter 3), the estimation of Volterra model parameters from input-output data, along with model structure selection, input sequence design, and model validation issues (Chapters 4 and 5), model inversion issues in the framework of model-based control (Chapter 6), direct synthesis and model predictive control design (Chapters 7 and 8), application case studies (Chapter 9) and guidelines for practical applications. Examples are drawn from chemical and biochemical engineering. The book reports recent results in the analysis, identification and control of systems described by Volterra models, and can be useful for researchers and practitioners.
