Ringel's Hall algebra approach constructs (positive parts of) quantized enveloping algebras from representations of quivers (see \textit{C. M. Ringel} [Invent. Math. 101, No. 3, 583-591 (1990; Zbl 0735.16009)] for the case of Dynkin quivers and \textit{J. A. Green} [ibid. 120, No. 2, 361-377 (1995; Zbl 0836.16021)] for the general case). In the Dynkin case, \textit{C. M. Ringel} also constructed in detail the Lie algebra from the Hall algebra [Adv. Math. 84, No. 2, 137-178 (1990; Zbl 0799.16013)]. The paper under review is devoted to a detailed construction of the affine Lie algebras from representation theory of quivers. This is based on the Hall algebra approach and uses techniques from representation theory of quivers, in particular reflection functors (see also \textit{B. Sevenhant} and \textit{M. Van den Bergh} [J. Algebra 221, No. 1, 135-160 (1999; Zbl 0955.16016)], for another use of reflection functors in the study of Hall algebras).
