The classical Schur theorem [\textit{I. Schur}, Math. Z. 1, 184-207 (1918; JFM 46.0174.03)] on orthogonalization of an arbitrary system of square integrable functions on \( (a,b)\subset R \) is generalized to \(L^2\)-functions prescribed on a set with countably additive non-negative measure. The obtained generalized Schur theorem is applied for orthogonalization of ortho-similar systems introduced in [\textit{T. P. Lukashenko}, Fundam. Prikl. Mat. 3, No. 2, 487-517 (1997; Zbl 0918.42024); Mosc. Univ. Math . Bull. 52, No. 5, 30-34 (1997); translation from Vestn. Mosk. Univ., Ser. I 1997, No. 5, 27-31 (1997; Zbl 0914.47022)].
