An exact evaluation of the nonrelativistic and the relativistic fermion determinants in \(2+1\) dimensions in a constant background field at finite temperature is carried out. The effect of a finite chemical potential is also considered. In both cases the systems are decoupled into an infinite number of \(1+1\) fermions, by Fourier transformation of the \(\beta\) variable. As discussed by the authors, the total effective actions show nonextensiveness in the \(\beta\) dimension. It turns out that the total effective action in the relativistic case is given by a divergent expression, which would need some interpretation in order to discuss the induced particle density and the spin of the system. These expressions, however, are in no way so simple as in the nonrelativistic case, where they are shown in the paper to coincide with previously known results. The paper ends with a comment on the possible interest of the results in order to bosonize fermion models, by using the duality transformation approach.
