Consider an arbitrary trigonometric series \[ \sum^\infty_{n=-\infty} c_n e^{inx}\tag{1} \] and set \[ S_n(x):= \sum^n_{k=-n} c_k e^{ikx},\quad \sigma_n(x):= {1\over n+1} \sum^n_{k=0} S_k(x),\quad n\geq 0. \] If (1) is a Fourier series, then its partial sums \(S_n\) converge (respectively, are bounded) in the metric of \(L\) if and only if \[ \|\sigma_n- S_n\|= o(1)\qquad (\text{respectively},\;=O(1)).\tag{2} \] The following theorem was proved in [Izv. Tul. Gos. Univ., Ser. Mat. Mekh. Inf. 4, No. 1, 40-46 (1998)] by the same author. Theorem. Suppose that there exists a positive constant \(C\) such that \[ 2^n \sum^{2^{n+1}- 1}_{k=2^n} (|c_k- c_{k+1}|^2+|c_{-k}- c_{-k-1}|^2)\leq Cn^2\quad\text{for all }n\geq 1.\tag{3} \] Then condition (2) is equivalent to the condition \[ (|c_n|+|c_{-n}|)\ln n= o(1)\qquad (\text{respectively},\;=O(1)). \] In the present paper, the author proves that conditon (3) in the above Theorem cannot be improved.
