Let \(G\) be a connected reductive linear algebraic group defined over an algebraically closed field of characteristic zero. For a reductive subgroup \(H\) of \(G\) and a simple \(G\)-module \(V_\lambda\) with highest weight \(\lambda\) let \(\text{res}_HV_\lambda\) denote the \(H\)-module obtained by restricting the representation of \(G\) on \(V_\lambda\) to \(H\). The branching rule is a device for computing the multiplicities \(\text{mult}(W,V_\lambda)=\dim\Hom_H(W,\text{res}_HV_\lambda)\) for each simple \(H\)-module \(W\). The author considers the case when \(H\) is a Levi subgroup of a parabolic subgroup \(P\) of \(G\). Generalising a result of M. Demazure, the author gives an upper bound for \(\text{mult}(W,V_\lambda)\). From this he obtains information on the rate of decay of relative multiplicities for certain simple subgroups of simple groups.
