Let \(\mathbb{R}\) be the field of real numbers. The authors show that an ideal \(I\) of \(\mathbb{R}[x_1, \dots, x_k]\) contains a polynomial with positive coefficients if and only if no initial ideal \(\text{in}_v(I)\), \(v\in \mathbb{R}^k\), has a zero with positive components. The proof is based on a result of \textit{D. Handelman} [``Positive polynomials and product type actions of compact groups'', Mem. Am. Math. Soc. 320 (1985; Zbl 0571.46045)] dealing with the case of a principal ideal and on the existence of universal Gröbner bases established by \textit{V. Weispfenning} [in: Applied algebra, algebraic algorithms and error-correcting codes, Proc. 5th Int. Conf., AAECC 5, Menorca 1987, Lect. Notes Comput. Sci. 356, 408-417 (1987; Zbl 0695.13002)].
