    The paper deals with the boundary value problem \[ Lu=\tilde f(t,u)+\tilde g(t,u),\; \text{ in} \; \Omega \subset \mathbb{R}^n\; \text{ and}\;u=0\; \text{ on}\;\partial \Omega, \] where \(\tilde f,\tilde g:\bar{\Omega} \times \mathbb{R}\to \mathbb{R}\) are Carathéodory functions, \(\tilde f,\tilde g,\tilde f_u,\tilde g_u\in L^1(\Omega),\) \(u\in H^1_0(\Omega,w),\) and \(L\) denotes the second order degenerate partial differential operator in the divergence form \[ Lu=-(a_{ij}(x)u_{xi})x_j+c(x)u, \] with \(\frac{a_{ij}}{w}\in L^\infty(\Omega),\; a_{ij}=a_{ji},\; c\in L^\infty(\Omega),\; c(x)\geq c^*>0,\) \(a_{ij}(x)\xi_i\xi_j\geq w(x)\;| \xi| ^2\) for \(x\in \Omega,\) a.e., \( H^1_0(\Omega,w),\) is the usual weighted Sobolev (Hilbert) space with the weight functions \(w:\Omega\to \mathbb{R}_+\) such that \[ w,\; w^{-1}\in L^1_{loc}(\Omega). \] The method of generalized quasilinearization is extended to semilinear degenerate elliptic boundary value problem (1).
