In this paper, the author investigates the Canonical Element Conjecture (CEC) continuing his previous work [\textit{S. P. Dutta}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 299, 803--811 (1987; Zbl 0611.13011), Math. Z. 216, No. 3, 379--388 (1994; Zbl 0806.13002), J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 50, No. 3, 477--487 (1994; Zbl 0813.13023), and J. Lond. Math. Soc., II. Ser. 56, No. 1, 49--63 (1997; Zbl 0892.13004)]. He studies the splitting of local cohomology of syzygies of the residue field \(K\) of a local ring \((A, m)\) of dimension \(n\) and its implications on the above mentioned conjecture. Starting with an interpretation of the conjecture found in his earlier work, he proves that if CEC holds in \(A\), then certain copies of \(K\) are direct summands in \(H^i_m(S_i)\), for \(0 \leq i \leq n-1\), where \(S_i\) are the \(i\)-th syzygies of \(K\). Moreover, if the Matlis dual of \(H^{n-1}_m(A)\) has positive depth and a certain copy of \(K\) is a direct summand in \(H^{n-1}_m(S_{n-1})\), then CEC holds in \(A\). Among other things, the author also proves that if \(H^{n-1}_m(A) =0\) (or \(\text{Ext}^1_R(A,R) =0\), where \(A\) is complete, \(A=R/I\), \(R\) Gorenstein and \(\dim R = \dim A\)), then \(A\) satisfies CEC, improving an earlier result of his.
