The purpose of the present paper is to study the 6-dimensional twistor space \(Z\) of an oriented 4-dimensional Riemannian manifold \(M\) as an example of almost Hermitian \(*\)-Einstein manifolds. The twistor space \(Z\) of \(M\) admits in a natural way a one-parameter family of Riemannian metrics \(h_t\), compatible with its two canonical almost complex structures \(J_1, J_2\), described by \textit{M. F. Atiyah}, \textit{N. J. Hitchin} and \textit{I. M. Singer} [Proc. R. Soc. Lond., Ser. A 362, 425-461 (1978; Zbl 0389.53011)] and \textit{J. Eells} and \textit{S. M. Salamon} [ Ann. Sc. Norm. Super. Pisa, Cl. Sci., IV. Ser. 12, 589-640 (1985; Zbl 0627.58019)], respectively. According to the main result of the paper, the twistor spaces \((Z,J_1,h_t)\) or \((Z,J_2,h_t)\) of \(M\) are \(*\)-Einstein if and only if \(M\) is self dual Einstein with constant scalar curvature \(|s|= 12/t\) or \(s=6/t\) respectively. It is based on an explicit formula of the \(*\)-Ricci tensor of \((Z,J_ih_t)\), \(i=1,2\) in terms of the curvature of \(M\), by using a previous formula obtained in \textit{J. Davidov} and \textit{0. Muškarov} [Acta Math. Hung. 58, 319-332 (1991; Zbl 0747.53030)] for the sectional curvature of \((Z,h_t)\). Additionally, it is proved that some results in dimension four related to the Riemannian Goldberg-Sachs theorem cannot be extended to higher dimensions.
