The author studies equations of classical nonlinear models in quantum mechanics and in field theory: the Cauchy problem of the nonlinear Schrödinger equation \[ \begin{cases} i \phi_t + \triangle \phi + \phi\phi^{p-1}=0, &t \geq 0,\;x \in \mathbb R^N, \\ \phi(0,x)=\phi_0(x_0), &x \in \mathbb R^N \end{cases} \tag{1} \] and the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation \[ \begin{cases} \phi_{tt} - \triangle \phi + \phi\phi^{p-1}=0, &t \geq 0,\;x \in \mathbb R^ N,\\ \phi(0,x)=\phi_0(x_0),\;\phi_t(0,x)=\phi_1(x_0), &x \in \mathbb R^N. \end{cases} \tag{2} \] where \(\phi=\phi(t,x):\mathbb R^+ \times \mathbb R^N \rightarrow C\), \(p > 1.\) He is concerned with sufficient conditions of global existence of the Cauchy problem of these equations. For \(N=2\), \(p \geq 3\), \(\phi_0(x) \in H^1(\mathbb R^2)\), he shows that the solution \(\phi(t,x)\) of the Cauchy problem (1): (i) blows up in a finite time or (ii) globally exists for \(t \in [0, \infty)\) depending on conditions on \(\phi_0(x).\) And for \(N \geq 2\) and \(1+4/N < p < (N+2)/N-2)\) (when \(N=2\), \(3<p<\infty\)) he obtains (i) and (ii) similarly. The author can also answer the question: How small must the initial data be, such that global solutions of (1) exist in \(\mathbb R^N\) for \(N \geq 2.\) As to equation (2), for \(N \geq 2\) and \(1 < p < (N+2)/N-2)\) (when \( N=2\), \(1<p<\infty\)) and for \((\phi_0,\phi_1) \in H^s(\mathbb R^n) \times H^{s-1} (\mathbb R^N)\) for \(s \geq N/2 \geq 1\) he obtains (i) and (ii) similarly, depending on conditions on \(\phi_0(x)\), \(\phi_1(x)\).
