Both compactly supported distributions and refinable function vectors are important for the approximation by multivariate splines and especially wavelets. In this context, the global and local linear independence are relevant because they are related to the numerical computation of the approximations and sometimes also to the mathematical construction of the wavelets or general approximation processes. In this paper, necessary and sufficient conditions for the global and, most importantly, local linear independence of these objects are discussed in multiple dimensions. The methods employed include in particular applications of invariant linear spaces.
