Let \(T\) be an asymptotically nonexpansive map (i.e., \(T^n\) is Lipschitz with Lipschitz constant sufficiently fast decreasing to \(1\)) in a uniformly convex Banach space which satisfies Opial's condition or has a Fréchet differentiable norm. It is proved that a certain modified Ishikawa iteration process [see \textit{S. Ishikawa}, Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 44, 147-150 (1974; Zbl 0286.47036)] converges weakly to a fixed point. This complements some results from \textit{K. K. Tan} and \textit{H. K. Xu} [Proc. Am. Math. Soc. 122, 733-739 (1994; Zbl 0820.47071)]. For nonexpansive maps sharper results are obtained, and under additional requirements also norm convergence of the sequence is proved.
