Golay complementary pairs are a much studied object in Discrete Mathematics. Roughly speaking, these are pairs of polynomials \(f\) and \(g\) with coefficients \(\pm 1\) such that \(f(x)f(x^{-1})+g(x)g(x^{-1})\) = constant in \({\mathbb Z}[x]\). Ternary complementary pairs are those pairs where \(f\) and \(g\) are allowed to have coefficients \(0\). The authors claim, ``Our theoretical knowledge of Golay sequences appears, for the present, to have reached a dead end, so it is natural to look at generalizations such as ternary complementary pairs, which are useful in their own right.'' If you agree with this, the paper is an interesting summary about our knowledge on ternary pairs.
