Let \(A\) be an absolute valued algebra over the reals, i.e. an algebra that is a normed space satisfying \(\|xy\|=\|x\|\|y\|\); and let \(A\) satisfy the identity \((x,x,x^2)=0\). The author proves that \(A\) is isomorphic to the real field, complex field, quaternion algebra, or Cayley-Dickson algebra if either \(A\) contains a nonzero idempotent which commutes with all elements of \(A\), or \(A\) is with involution. He also constructs such a 2-dimensional \(A\) which is not isomorphic to the complex numbers.
