Let \(A\) be a von Neumann algebra. The category of Hilbertian \(A\)-modules was introduced in [\textit{W. Lück} and \textit{M. Rothenberg}, \(K\)-Theory 5, No. 3, 213-264 (1991; Zbl 0748.57007)] and the category of self-dual Hilbert \(C^*\)-modules over \(A\) was introduced in [\textit{W. L. Paschke}, Trans. Am. Math. Soc. 182, 443-468 (1973; Zbl 0265.46056)]. The main result of the paper is equivalence of these categories. It sheds new light on basic results in \(L^2\)-invariant theory providing alternative proofs. The author also indicates, how modular frames can be used to obtain new invariants for Hilbert \(C^*\)-modules over \(C^*\)-algebras with a trace.
