The authors introduce two algebraic completely integrable systems, similar to the even and Mumford systems. To show that the hyperelliptic Prym systems are algebraic completely integrable systems they exhibit a family of compatible (linear) Poisson structures, making these systems multi-Hamiltonian. As an application they study the algebraic geometry and the Hamiltonian structure of the periodic Volterra lattice \[ \dot a_i= a_i(a_{i-1}-a_{i+1}), \quad i=1,\dots, n,\;a_{n+1}= a_1. \tag{1} \] Moreover, they give a precise description of the fibers of the momentum map of (1) and prove their algebraic complete integrability.
